ADASL returns with Summa Cup Semifinals

ATLANTA, GA - After an extended break due to COVID-19, the Atlanta District Amateur Soccer League (ADASL) resumed play on Sunday with the semifinals of its annual cup competition, the Summa Fall Cup.

In the first match of the afternoon in northeast Atlanta, newcomers Rovers FC faced off against ADASL stalwarts Club ATLetic. The first half was uneventful and produced no goals, but the teams were clearly an even match from the first whistle. Both sides could only craft half-chances from the first 45 minutes, though, and the match was deadlocked at 0-0 at the break.

As it would turn out, the second half looked much the same. There wasn't much to separate the two sides in the second half, either, as neither side could produce a match-winner in regular time. By letter of the law, the match went straight to penalties.

The two goalkeepers traded deflections in the first two spot kicks, but neither one could keep the shot out of the goal. After two penalties each, the score was 2-2. Rovers then struck the post on their third attempt, but ATLetic failed to capitalize, putting the ball down the middle for an easy save. Rovers missed a second straight penalty on their fourth attempt, and ATLetic took the lead at the second time of asking, making it 3-2 after four shots each. Rovers delivered a match-saving goal on their fifth try, leaving it all down to ATLetic's fifth penalty taker. He put it too close to the keeper, though, extending the game and bringing on sudden death at 3-3 on penalties.

Rovers went first again and arrowed one into the roof of the net, and Club ATLetic's resistance finally fell short after a third save from the hero of the day, Rovers' keeper. The result sent Rovers into the Summa Fall Cup finals to face the winner of the game that followed, contested by FC Vinotinto ATL and the league leaders in the regular season table, Majestic SC.

This one was much more decisive than its predecessor, as Majestic got off to an early start, leading 2-0 after 40 minutes. At that time, the live stream via mycujoo.tv cut off, but by the end of the match, Majestic had run up the score to the tune of five goals, keeping a clean sheet in the process for a 5-0 final score. Vinotinto, one of two clubs in the ADASL with a Venezuelan influence, came up short in their first Summa Fall Cup appearance, due in part to their two red cards and subsequent 9-man status for a large part of the match.

The final of the 2020 Summa Fall Cup is set for Sunday, February 21 between Majestic and Rovers and will be played at a venue still to be determined.
